“The Mediterranean is the most intelligent sea—no one can deny it. There is no other sea like the Mediterranean: it is the inner hem of the world. It is the womb. The amniotic fluid of civilization.”
– Alev Lytle Croutier
The concept of the Wider Mediterranean was developed by the Italian Maritime Warfare Institute in Livorno in the 1980s. In today’s global landscape, characterized by simultaneous crises, economic development, wars, migration, and new technological challenges, the Osservatorio Strategico sul Mediterraneo Allargato embraces this concept as the core focus of its analytical activities.
Established in 2025, the Osservatorio Strategico Mediterraneo Allargato is responsible for the publication of reports and academic articles on various issues of international concern pertaining to the geostrategic area of the Enlarged Mediterranean. The Osservatorio’s primary objectives are threefold: firstly, the dissemination of scientific knowledge; secondly, the promotion of central issues in the academic debate concerning the region’s future; and thirdly, the consolidation of links between citizens of the area, through the creation of “bridges” between professionals and young experts in the field. By doing so, the Osservatorio fosters a new scientific, multicultural and youthful perspective. Each article undergoes a rigorous review process to ensure the accuracy and quality of the content, as well as compliance with the Osservatorio’s standards.
